2012 is shaping up to be a pretty major year for Joan Smalls. It’s only June, and the Puerto Rican stunner has already earned herself a solo W cover (along with supermodel pal Karlie Kloss), a gig fronting Fendi‘s fall campaign, and now a plumb spot shilling high-end wheels for Mercedes-Benz.
The commercial, released today, is directed by Mario Testino and stars a Mugler-clad Smalls tearing through the shrouds of ropes and sheets covering both herself and her treasured CLS Shooting Brake — which, as an aside, seems to us like weird name for a car. But then again we’re hardly auto experts.
Smalls then slides into the vehicle, smirking at the warehouse guard and opening the sunroof to make room for her towering Mohawk.
And while the whole femme-fatale-meets-action-movie narrative is a little hackneyed, it’s right in line with M-B‘s M.O. (and right up their clientele’s alley, we’re guessing). At least this year the director didn’t have his star scampering around a building in 5-inch heels, which is more than we can say about last year’s Terry Richardson-directed spot.
