Joanna Coles On Replacing Tim Gunn For Project Runway: All Stars

One day we’re going to meet Marie Claire editor-in-chief Joanna Coles, befriend her and join in her mission of keeping things real. But until that day is here, we’ll be watching her on Project Runway: All Stars, where she’ll be replacing Tim Gunn as design adviser to this season’s group of contestants.

Coles talked to The Huffington Post about the impossibly large and fashionable shoes she’ll step into on Lifetime tonight, touching on everything from how intense the competition is going to be (so intense!) to what how her judging philosophy will differ from Gunn’s. (Hint: It has a lot to do with underwear.) Check out our favorite parts of the interview below.

On taking Gunn’s place:

It’s extremely daunting to be in the same workroom that he worked in. It’s even daunting to pick up the same pencil that he’s held. But Tim and I are good friends, and honestly, if I can be an acorn under his oak tree, I would be thrilled. I absorbed as much as I could by osmosis and put my own twist on it.

On how she’ll judge the designer’s work:

I have a very realistic approach to fashion. If you want to be the next Michael Kors, you have to be able to be creative — which they all are — but you have to have an eye to commerce, too. I’m also a big believer in designing clothes that women can wear underwear with.

On the contestants themselves:

There are several divas. Sometimes you get one or two divas in fashion.

Only one or two? Check out the rest of Coles’s interview here.
