Since taking over the reins at Cosmopolitan this past September, Kate White‘s successor and current editor-in-chief Joanna Coles has fired nine staffers, despite saying that she was “not going to muddle” with the magazine.
According to Fashionologie, seven of the people Coles let go were from editorial, and the remaining two came from the photo department. She’s already brought in new creative and executive directors (Paul Solomons of British GQ and Joyce Chang of Marie Claire, respectively), but she’s left a lot of holes in the Cosmo staff that have yet to be filled. Upon her first meeting with Jessica Knoll (who is now the rag’s last senior editor standing), Coles reportedly said,
“Kate [White] told me you’re a rock star. But Kate’s gone, so it doesn’t matter now.”
We would certainly be intimidated if we heard that from our new boss the very first time we met her. We’re very interested to see where Coles is taking the magazine, especially in light of all these shakeups, because despite the awkward Taylor Swift “Crazy for a Kennedy!” headline debacle, we like the look of Coles’ Cosmo.
