Tonchi Taps New York Mag’s Jody Quon For Creative Director

Watching a magazine be renovated before our eyes is a fascinating process, and Stefano Tonchi’s quick work at W magazine is no exception.

Last week, WWD speculated that Tonchi’s next hires would be Vogue’s Sally Singer and New York Magazine‘s Jody Quon – and so far, they’re one for one. In what they’re calling Tonchi’s “biggest hire to date,” W’s new EIC has managed to snag Quon out from under the nose of NY Mag editor-in-chief Adam Moss, where she’s been photo director since 2004. The most interesting part of Quon’s background might be the fact that prior to her tenure at New York, she spent over 10 years at the Grey Lady, in the photo department at The New York Times Magazine — also known as Tonchi’s old stomping grounds.

Tonchi told WWD, “Jody has a background that goes beyond just beauty and fashion — she knows photojournalism, she knows images. She is open to not just traditional fashion photography.”

We can’t wait to see what Quon does with the ailing glossy, but more importantly, we can’t wait to see if WWD’s Sally Singer prediction holds true as well.
