John Galliano To Stand Trial For Cafe Incident

John Galliano will have to stand trial over the anti-Semitic rant and fight he engaged in at a Paris cafe last Thursday, which led to his very public fall from glory.

The Paris Prosecutors Office released a statement to reporters saying that they’ve decided to put Galliano on trial just after the designer released a statement apologizing for his behavior. Making anti-Semitic statements like the one Galliano is accused of making in this case are a crime in France, and if he’s convicted he could be sentenced to up to six months in prison. He could also be ordered to hand over $31,000 in fines.

Galliano is expected to sit before a French court sometime between April and June.

If you haven’t been following the story, a scandal erupted late last week when Galliano got in a mostly verbal altercation at La Perle, a cafe in Paris, with locals Geraldine Bloch and Philippe Virgiti. It was widely reported that Bloch accused Galliano of making anti-Semitic comments toward her, though eyewitnesses have said that’s not the case. Galliano was suspended from his professional duties at Dior before a video surfaced of the designer drunkenly declaring “I love Hitler” at the same cafe, but it was unclear if that video came from the same incident. He was subsequently fired from Dior. He released an apology taking responsibility for his actions and condemning all forms of prejudice. He is believed to have fled France to go to a rehabilitation clinic in Arizona.

In less than a week, John Galliano has gone from being one of the greatest living designers to being an unemployed man accused of no less than two instances of flagrant public racism. And for everything his famous apologists in the fashion industry have tried to do for him in the court of public opinion, they won’t be able to do much in a court of law.
