After famously dressing first lady Michelle Obama earlier this year, designer Kai Milla is closing her doors for good. It’s an unfortunate story made even more unfortunate by the long line of people waiting for Milla to give them money she’s owed for months.
A source told The New York Post that Milla, who’s married to Stevie Wonder, cannot be reached by any method of communication.
“The company has left many creditors coming after her to be paid for time, service, and materials,” the source said. “Modeling agencies, production crews, design assistants, pattern makers, office and store landlords have all been trying to contact her office in Los Angeles and New York for months for payment.”
But the phone lines in her New York office have been disconnected, and her Los Angeles office has been taken over by another company. Her Facebook page hasn’t been updated since last September, and despite showing a spring 2010 collection at New York Fashion Week last year, Milla’s website still features video from her spring 2008 collection.
Michelle Obama never seemed particularly attached to Milla’s designs, but she did tend to wear a good deal of designer Maria Pinto, who went out of business last year. We don’t point that out to say that Michelle Obama is causing these designers to go out of business, but if the first lady’s endorsement can’t help a struggling business stay afloat, what hope is there?
