Fashion reality show alumni often fall into two categories: those who make it in the industry and those who don’t. Fashion Star winner Kara Laricks falls into the former, and this afternoon, she showed her spring 2013 collection in an industrial space inside Pier 57.
The 15 ensembles were a mix of masculine and feminine looks — cute rompers with a long tuxedo tail, cuffed shorts, sexy slip dresses, and cocktail dresses with cummerbunds. Models stood on podiums, and every so often, they were handed coconut water. That’s the first time we’ve seen that happen — we guess Laricks didn’t want a repeat of what happened at Jason Wu‘s Miss Wu presentation.
We chatted with Laricks, and the former fourth-grade teacher told us that winning Fashion Star gave her the opportunity of a lifetime. Having her designs sold in H&M was the perfect opportunity to get her name out, and showing her work during New York Fashion Week is a truly a dream come true. Judging from the well-tailored and covetable pieces from today’s presentation, we’re betting that we’ll see more from the talented designer in the future.
