Why Karl Lagerfeld Really Made Those Chanel Hula Hoop Bags


One of the stand-out pieces from Karl Lagerfeld‘s Chanel spring 2013 collection was the “hula hoop bag”. The bag in question is literally a giant quilted number held between two hula hoops. It’s impractical and unnecessary, but Karl obviously doesn’t think so. He even modeled it for editor Derek Blasberg (above).

Here’s what he had to say to The Daily Telegraph about the bag’s usefulness:

“It’s for the beach. You need space for the beach towel, huh? And then you can put it into the sand and hang things on it, and things like that. The bathing suit with it was the only thing with the Chanel logo, there was no logo.”

So, basically, he created a très fancy towel rack? Yep.

The Kaiser also discussed those oversized pearls, taking the interlocking-Cs out of the collection, and using different fabrics. Check it out:
