Karl Lagerfeld On Kate Middleton: She Has ‘A Divine Silhouette’

We weren’t joking when we said Karl Lagerfeld was taking over London yesterday. He feted his Karl Lagerfeld Paris Man, Karl, and Olympic-themed collections inside Selfridges with the likes of Daphne Guinness, Poppy Delevingne, and Tallulah Harlech. Lagerfeld was two hours late to his own party, causing everyone to wait around until 9:00 p.m. But it was all worth it.

The third floor was transformed into a monochromatic space dotted with racks of Lagerfeld’s new Olympic merch, which includes collars in gold, silver, and bronze shades. Lagerfeld chatted with Grazia and Elle (those lucky ducks!), and of course, the interviews are awesome.

Lagerfeld usually says a lot of crazy things that don’t make sense, but this particular bit is not one of them. He admits that the Olympic-themed collection is an opportunistic move:

“Yes, at the moment you have to be a little opportunistic because it’s the thing of the moment. It’s a great year for England with the anniversary of the Queen and the Olympics.”

And then we go back to krazy Karl. He has a bunch of wacky things to say about his adorable cat Choupette:

“I never expected to like a cat because I’ve had dogs in the past but Choupette is fragile. She goes to the doctors every 10 days to check her weight and see if everything is okay. She even has a personal maid. Yes, she’s very clever. Generally cats don’t speak but when she wants something, she just sits in front of it. It’s unbelievable.”

Even though Lagerfeld’s opportunistic when it comes to designing clothes for humans, he’ll never create anything for little Chou-Chou. He’s also scared she’ll become more popular than himself:

“She hates anything attached to her body, not even her neck. Nothing! No, No. Her fur is so beautiful. She’s like a huge powderpuff with blue eyes. People are stunned by her! I’ve done stories about her with Harper’s Bazaar, V magazine with Laetitia Casta, and for W magazine. I think it’s fun. Soon people will talk more about Choupette than about me!”

He confirms that Choupette is starring in V with Casta! Lagerfeld also weighs in on Kate Middleton, who he already thinks she has a nice butt:

“She knows pretty well what to wear and what to do. She has a divine silhouette so she can wear anything. She has a sense of what’s right for the moment because you can not dress like a mad woman in those situations.”

Of course, since the new YSL logo was released earlier this week, Lagerfeld had thoughts, and joins Betty Catroux and Pierre Bergé on team SL:

“All of them, Dior and Hedi at Saint Laurent, are friends of mine, so I think it’s a very good thing. Paris needs some new things, some stimulation. It’s good for everybody. Competition is a healthy thing in life, especially in this business. I love the idea. I think it’s interesting and it’s important. Something fresh was needed.”
