Human Pez dispenser of quotes, Karl Lagerfeld, has an ability to open his mouth and piss off entire continents that rivals his ability to make stuff. One of his more memorable quotes was the infamous, “No one wants to see curvy women on the catwalk,” which is cited in his recently published and aptly-titled book The World According to Karl.
That comment has now led to him facing legal action from a French association that fights for the rights of curvy women. Belle, Ronde, Sexy et Je M’assume (Beautiful, Rounded, Sexy and Ok With It) have filed a complaint at the prosecutor’s office in the commune of Saintes in southwestern France, accusing the designer of “defamatory and discriminatory comments.”
“We’re fed up,” Betty Aubriere, the group’s president, told AFP. “Many young girls are insecure and hearing such comments is terrible for them,” particularly from famous people. “Today it’s him who insults us and tomorrow who will it be?”
Adding insult to insult, the now immortalized comment was repeated by Largerfeld on television when he went on air to blame all the fatties for France’s struggling healthcare system. “The hole in social security, it’s also [due to] all the diseases caught by people who are too fat,” he told Le Grand 8 on French television channel D8 on October 4 before reiterating his runway comment.
Okay Karl, we are indebted to you for infinite LOLs, and also for this amazing photo of you eating a greasy cheeseburger. But maybe this is a sign it’s time to think before opening your mouth to speak the words ‘fat’, ‘curvy’ or ’roundish’ — for one, having a disease cased by excess body weight is very different to having a few healthy curves. And secondly, we’re not all fiends for a thigh gap.
