Why Did Vogue Italia Censor This Photo Of Karlie Kloss?

Karlie Kloss‘ 16-page spread for Vogue Italia turned heads yesterday and not just because it was the 19-year-old’s first nude photoshoot. Aptly titled “Body By Kloss”, the spread featured amazing shots of Kloss’ athletic and supremely toned body, with a few eye-catching angles and awkward poses thrown in for good measure. And while we genuinely debated whether a couple of the images were photoshopped, Vogue Italia has gone ahead and pulled the most questionable from their site.

Fashion Copious was the first to notice the missing picture. Julia and I spent a while going back and forth on this one yesterday. At first glance, it looks like they did a serious chop-job on her hip. On second glance (and some photo research later), we decided that Karlie Kloss has naturally large-boned and decidedly square hips (which you can see in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show image we’ve included below.) So, did editor in chief Franca Sozzani decide she just didn’t like the shot? Or could she see the photoshop (true or not) backlash waiting to happen?

Or, perhaps even more fittingly, as we’re not sure Sozzani is the type to preemptively back down, she saw the image as potential thinspiration and pulled it so as not to seem (or be) hypocritical.

What do you think of the shot below?
