Why You Won’t Be Invited To Kate Middleton’s Baby Shower

Not that we were expecting an invite or anything, but it looks like Kate Middleton will be abstaining from a well-known pregnancy rite of passage: the baby shower.

She’s following in good footsteps, however — neither Queen Elizabeth nor Queen Victoria hosted them, apparently, and we’re fairly certain pastel-colored rattles didn’t play a big part in the monarchies of the Middle Ages. And we give kudos to the royal couple for their tacit acknowledgement that they are well in possession of the necessary funds for pretty much anything their newborn might want.

Olivia Robinson, creative director of the super popular British baby goods chain Mamas and Papas, says that in the U.K., it’s customary to opt out of the more lavish (read: American) baby shower, and that usually, the grandparents are responsible for providing the young couple with one expensive but sensible gift.

Charles and Camilla, may we suggest a how-to book for wearing voluminous hats? That seems to us like the most daunting part of the royal experience.
