It turns out that the pretty earrings Kate Middleton wore to celebrate Queen Elizabeth‘s Diamond Jubilee this weekend were cubic zirconia, not diamond. GASP. (Actually, we’re not surprised.)
The faux-pearl and diamond earrings cost £48, or around $74, and are from an online shop called Heavenly Necklaces, the Daily Mail reports. The pearls are actually made from a mixture of resin and ground-up pearls, and the diamonds are finest grade cubic zirconia. Owner Belinda Hadden had no idea that Kate wore the earrings until one of her clients tipped her off in an e-mail. Then the Kate Middleton Effect kicked in, and Hadden sold 60 pairs of earrings within 24 hours — the same amount she’d sell in a year. Hadden’s e-commerce earring page currently notes that there is “phenomenal demand at the moment and pieces are selling out fast”.
So, why are we not surprised Kate wore costume jewelry? Because it’s totally her style to wear affordable and accessible things! She wears Zara and she often recycles her wardrobe! Kate probably gets a ton of offers to wear designer things, but homegirl chooses to buy her clothes instead of borrowing them. Yes, she’s a super fancy princess, but she’s still modest and down-to-earth about her fashion choices. Even Karl Lagerfeld defends her style!
