This is either the most ingenious viral marketing campaign ever devised ever, or a bout of really fortuitous timing. A couple in an English town called Taunton have found a jelly bean that looks so much like Kate Middleton, they think they can sell it on eBay for £500.
On the off chance you’re not sitting in front of a Bloomberg terminal right now, £500 is about $816 at current exchange. Which means that 25-year-old Wesley Hosie and his girlfriend Jessica White (no relation to the model Jessica White) might just have enough money to put a downpayment on a bona fide PS1. Because that’s how much jelly beans that look like Kate Middleton are worth.
Hosie told The Daily Telegraph that he and White were about to dig into a 700g jar of candy from the Jelly Bean Factory when he saw the Middleton’s face staring back at him from the top of the heap. He thinks it’s a miraculous coincidence, but given what we’ve heard about the beans from Richard Cullen, some big wig at the factory that makes them, we wouldn’t be surprised if this was planned.
“All of our beans are handmade and this looks like one of our red speckled Mango beans, the natural speckles are unique to each and every jelly bean due to the handmade process.”
Handmade, eh? Sure. You can’t buy press like this, but you sure can engineer it. Our gripe is that Middleton’s likeness looks a little too much like Middleton to have been created spontaneously. So we’d advise Hosie and White not to sell themselves — or their jellybean — too short. In 2003, a partially eaten piece of toast with burn marks that only vaguely resembled the Virgin Mary got $28,000 at auction. And with the Royal Wedding fever pitch swiftly approaching its peak, this bean could probably get more.
