We’ve watched our fair share of awkward interviews on Jimmy Fallon, but last night’s with Kate Upton definitely takes the cake.
Naturally, the topic of conversation was Upton’s second consecutive Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover. Fallon brings out a copy, marvels at the bodacious image, and promptly asks his guest if this is the first time a model has covered the issue twice in a row. Five have, Upton claims, though only one has done three consecutive covers — Elle Macpherson.
As it turns out, that’s actually incorrect — Christie Brinkley was the first to land the cover three years in a row from 1979 to 1981, while Macpherson did the honors from 1986 to 1988. But the awkward part comes when Fallon flips through the issue, gets all flustered, and suggests that instead of chilly Antarctica, Upton should shoot next year’s (possible) cover in space via a green screen because, as he reminds us, “there’s no gravity.” And cue awkward laughter.
The host tries to make up for it with an explanation, but Upton echoes our thoughts completely and says, “It’s geting worse!”
