In the feature, Upton looks very prim and covered up (read: almost unrecognizable) in Altuzarra boots, hats, and coats. According to the story, she wants nothing more than to break into the world of high fashion. She said in the profile:
“I’m from Florida, where your whole wardrobe is flip-flops, cutoffs, and bikinis. Now I enjoy fashion so much, but I don’t think people realize it, because I’m always in a bikini,” she said in the profile.
She was snubbed by Victoria’s Secret — becoming one of their Angels probably would have been the obvious route for Upton — but this profile may be exactly the validation she needs, because let’s face it: When Anna Wintour gives her approval, the rest of the fashion world tends to fall in line. Apparently Michael Kors already has, because Upton sat at his table at the Met’s Costume Institute Gala (though there were rumors that she had to buy her own ticket) and has been giving the model advice. He said to Upton in the profile:
“You’re not a wallflower; you fill the room! You have something special, so you can turn the volume down. A girl who is vanilla has to turn it up. Today it’s not enough to be a beauty. You have to have personality, be smart, and love fashion, or else you’ll disappear quickly.”
We remain somewhat unconvinced of Upton’s ability to make the leap from nearly-nude spreads to high fashion, but let’s be real: Anna Wintour’s opinion is the one that matters. We just may see this girl on the catwalk come Fashion Week.
