It’s no secret that we love the ‘90s, nor that fashion’s long held an obsession with the decade of glitter jellies and overalls. Because, really, why wouldn’t you? Even Style.com’s on the bandwagon, recruiting Courtney Love to jot down her awesomely incoherent ramblings on sniffing tequila and searching for the perfect Edwardian ‘dream blouse’.
But we were a little surprised to see that the normally über-polished Katy Perry – she of the ‘Fresh, Romantic’ Vogue covers and two-hour makeup routines – careering full-bore into the grunge era during a trip to Elvis Duran’s Z100 morning show yesterday. Off-the-shoulder crushed velvet is one thing, but the belt, the boots and the miniature leather backpack suggest more than a little pre-planning.
And those giant headphones? They’re so ’90s even she can’t handle it:
But turns out this was just a dress rehearsal for her MTV VMA promo vid. The short clip, released last night, shows Katy crawling out of a manhole and strutting around the Barclays Center at the apex of a human triangle in a plaid mini, waist sweater and cross-printed halter top. She’s certainly been putting her VHS to good use: It’s part Empire Records, part The Craft and part Ninja Turtles, and full proof that she’s done trying to win cred with the delightfully out-of-touch Manhattan-favorers at Vogue.
Katy’s coming for you Sunday, August 25 – would you prefer her to do it in grunge or stick to tried-and-tested Hollywood glam?
