Why Kim Kardashian Is So Upset About Her Turkish Cosmo Cover

Kim Kardashian‘s magazine covers are going to cause drama no matter where they are, but we never anticipated the firestorm of near-political controversy surrounding her latest glossy front. Kardashian, who’s never been shy about her Armenian heritage, shot a few photos for the international editions of Cosmopolitan, and one of them ended up on the cover of Turkish Cosmo. And if you remember your high school world history class, Turkey is responsible for the 20th century’s first genocide — against the Armenians.

Naturally, Kardashian is said to be highly upset that her image was used on the cover of a Turkish magazine. TMZ reports that while she and her representatives knew that her image would be used for several of the international editions, Cosmopolitan never mentioned that it would be on the Turkish edition, and especially not this month. Kardashian’s image runs on the cover of the first Armenian edition of the magazine and in a handful of other countries.

Kardashain seems to be taking the slight in stride. She wrote a post on her blog saying she regrets that she’s on the April cover, but that she hopes this will be one of those teachable moments:

I have an amazing relationship with Cosmopolitan Magazine. World-over, Cosmo is known as a fun and inspiring magazine for women of all races, shapes, sizes, regardless of their political beliefs and I really hope that if I can bring awareness to the issue, then this in an accomplishment.

But if Kardashian is taking it in stride, the Armenian National Committee of America is not. The organization’s president Aram Hamparian expressed some extreme disdain for the cover.

“It’s disrespectful to Kim Kardashian and to all Armenians for the publishers of Cosmopolitan to use her image, without her permission, on the month we mark Turkey’s genocide against the Armenian people.”

We’ll have to suppose that whatever release forms Kardashian signed means that she did give the magazine permission to use her image, even if she and her lawyers didn’t realize it. Maybe the magazine was offering some kind of weird olive branch to Kardashian and the Armenian people. Maybe its editors knew that putting her on an April cover would mean the magazine would get lots of attention. But regardless of why they chose to put her on this cover, the decision was still pretty insensitive.
