We thought Kirsten Dunst‘s ad for Bulgari‘s Mon Jasmin Noir would be pretty standard as far as fragrance ads go. Beautiful person posing with a bottle of perfume in some state of dishabille. It’s a pretty straightforward formula, but photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott saw fit to muck it up with a lion.
And not a small, cute lion like there were in Julianne Moore‘s ads for the brand. A fully grown male lion. The kind of animal a naked woman on the shores of Lake Como (where the ad was shot) has no business being near.
Lions are a big part of Bulgari’s iconography. We can’t remember a time when there weren’t lions growling at us from the company’s wares, but that doesn’t mean there has to be a real lion in the ads, does it? As photoshopped as the lion in this ad looks, the folks at SassyBella have behind-the-scenes photos showing a real lion on set. Dunst herself only got within biting distance of a taxidermy one, though.
Anyway, we think the lion is a little overboard. What do you think?
