This morning brings yet another turn in the widening gyre of media spectacle that is Kim Kardashian‘s divorce from basketball player Kris Humphries. Word has it that Humphries has filed for an annulment, claiming that because he was “defrauded” into marrying her, the marriage was never legitimate.
TMZ reports that Humphries thought the marriage was the real deal, but in light of the divorce (and the resulting news coverage of it) thinks he may have been duped into marrying Kardashian specifically for publicity. In court papers he’s asking for Kardashian to pay his legal fees (the idea being that he wouldn’t need lawyers in the first place if this marriage was an actual marriage. Page Six reports that the court papers list Oct. 31 as their date of separation, the same day Kim filed for divorce.
Of course, the demise of any relationship is sad, and the court proceedings involved with this one really only make it that much more unfortunate. Especially now that someone who just a month ago said he was “willing to do whatever it takes to make it work” is now convinced his entire relationship was a sham.
For what its worth, Humphries’ team of handlers says he was legitimately in love with Kim, and didn’t agree to marry her so she could pose as his beard. A rep said any suggestion that Humphries plays for the other team is “completely false and ridiculous. He is not gay.”
