Miuccia Prada is a genius and her designs make us believe she’s progressive, but then we remember that she’s one of the designers most guilty for lack of racial diversity in her model casting.
While some might heap praise on Prada for casting a black model, Cindy Bruna, in her Spring 2014 ad campaign shot by Steven Meisel, we can’t help but be bothered by the fact that she’s only the third woman of color to pose for the Italian fashion house. Last season, Prada casted 18-year-old black model Malaika Firth, who was the first model to appear in a Prada campaign since Naomi Campbell in, wait for it, 1994. We wonder what Campbell has to say about that.
According to The Fashion Spot, Firth will appear in unreleased images from this forthcoming campaign, but we’re unsettled by the fact that Prada’s collection was inspired by “strong women,” yet feels it’s kosher to predominately cast white ones.
