Here’s Everything You Need To Know About Lady Gaga’s Perfume

Lady Gaga‘s perfume may just be the most confusing fragrance ever. Does it really include a sample of her blood? What’s up with the color changing situation? What will it smell like? So many questions! And now we have the answers. (Also: photos!)

The singer, who’s had a troubled past, wanted a fragrance that was like her personality and her music — unique, sweet, and dark. That presented the perfumers at fragrance licensor Coty with a challenge, but the result fits perfectly with the singer.

The fragrance is black in the bottle, but the liquid sprays clear and becomes invisible when airborne. (There’s a whole science behind it!) The structure of the perfume is also quite unique. Most scents have bottom, middle, and top notes, but Gaga’s scent has a “trampoline structure”. Allow Coty’s senior vice president Steve Mormoris to explain:

“It has a trampoline structure — notes are rising at different rates that are quite random. Some accords will come out if you rub it, other accords will come out later. It has random propulsion and doesn’t have a classic linear drydown. We call it push-pull, and it will smell different on different people. There is a different volatility for different notes, and they’re of differing strengths. They work together harmoniously, but then they undergo metamorphosis on the skin, so you’re constantly surprised.”

So here’s what it’ll smell like:

“The dark accord was inspired by belladonna, the deadly plant, and has incense; the sensual accord includes honey, saffron and apricot nectar. The light accord features crushed tiger orchid and jasmine sambac. Together, the notes read as a fruity floral focused around belladonna. (Welcome news to her fans — when she announced the deal, Gaga had visions of blood and semen notes.)”

Four sizes are available, and prices range from $19 to $79. The 100-ml. bottle, lovingly called the Ultimate Masterpiece, resembles Gaga’s carriage from the 2011 Grammys. The egg-shaped bottle has a gold-toned cap with metal extensions made to look like claws. Gaga worked with fashion photog Nick Knight on the bottle design, and an undisclosed number of stores will carry the bottle exclusively. Three thousand domestic and 30,000 international stores will sell the fragrance beginning in late August.

Ads will appear in the September issues, television spots are being planned, and a three-minute feature film is in the works. In other words, Lady Gaga’s planning to dominate the fragrance world. Move over, Biebs.
