At first, Lady Gaga and Giorgio Armani seemed like an unlikely pair; Gaga is avant garde incarnate, while Armani tends toward the classic. But given Armani’s celeb savvy, it’s actually a multi-million dollar match made in fashion heaven. Nearly 30 years ago he was the first designer to open a Hollywood office. He’s been dressing celebrities ever since — from Richard Gere in American Gigolo to Christian Bale in The Dark Knight (yeah, Batman wears Armani). While Armani’s suits continue to drive business, he’s seen his share of the red carpet glam gown real estate dwindle in recent years. Enter: Gaga.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the Gaga/Giorgio affair began last fall:
Armani’s relationship with Lady Gaga began last November when Ms. Armani saw Lady Gaga perform live at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles. Ms. Armani contacted Lady Gaga’s stylist, Nicola Formichetti, to see whether Lady Gaga might wear Armani for the Grammy Awards’ evening, which was two months away.
Armani whipped up three designs for the singer, all of which adhered to the moon theme of his upcoming Privé collection. Outer space + the Gags? Too perfect. The Lady herself thought so too, and wore all three of the ensembles to the awards show. Gaga made the next move, asking Armani to design the costumes for the dancers in her “Alejandro” video.
The singer wanted tight black military-style leather suits for the male dancers. The description fit the image Mr. Armani was playing with for the upcoming men’s collection of his Emporio Armani line. At Emporio’s June fashion show in Milan, models wore the same black bondage outfits as in the video while the “Alejandro” video played on the wall at the back of the runway.
Gaga has worn Armani on her latest concert tour, on American Idol and to the VMAs. What’s next? Armani is set to design Gaga’s costumes for her December concert in Italy — especially fitting, given Armani and Gaga’s Italian heritage. And after a year of collaboration, maybe they’ll actually meet IRL on Armani’s home turf.
