The Lady has spoken in the ongoing (and, yes, rather silly) dispute between Oscar de la Renta and Cathy Horyn that began when the former took out a full-page ad in WWD rebuking Horyn’s column that called him “far more a hot dog than an éminence grise of American fashion” and countering with the accusation that his critic could be fairly called “a stale 3-day-old” hamburger.”
Of course, Horyn was not literally referring to the designer as a concession stand foodstuff, but rather “someone showing off his tricks, like an athlete,” however de la Renta stood by his words and actions, and now he has a powerful supporter on his side of the ring, since Lady Gaga yesterday took to Twitter to share her vote of confidence with her 29.5 million followers:
Bravo Oscar. Only you would be so chic as to purchase an entire page in WWD, making statements like a good fashion citizen.
Erika Bearman, de la Renta’s senior vice president of public relations, replied:
I showed Oscar your tweet and he was totally overwhelmed. he said thank you. and that you are a true fashion star.
This isn’t the first time Gaga has voiced her distaste for Horyn. For last year’s September issue of V magazine, she railed against the New York Times critic in a rambling tirade of a column against the old guard of fashion criticism. Maybe Gaga should really show her support by swapping her infamous meat dress for a hot dog number at her next show? Or maybe by now this dispute is turning into a bit of a stale hamburger itself.
