Keeping up with the details of anything related to Lady Gaga is like keeping up with Karl Lagerfeld‘s side projects. Impossible. The music videos, the outfits, the Birkins — it sometimes seems too overwhelming to bear.
We brought you the video and the details from Gaga’s stylist, Nicola Formichetti, and now, we bring you some insight into Alejandro from the man who would know best — aside from Gaga herself — the video’s director, Steven Klein.
Fashion Copious reports Steven Klein released the following statements about the much discussed meaning(s) behind the music video. We were happy simply staring at 8 minutes of a Gaga fashion explosion, but everyone has been itching to figure out the story behind it all. So if you, like us, have been part of conversations trying to dissect and understand Alejandro, here are the facts.
On what influenced him:
“I was not thinking in terms [of influences.] I saw it more as a combination of cinema and theater. [It is] about a woman’s desire to resurrect a dead love and who can not face the brutality of her present situation. The pain of living without your true love.”
On the religious symbolism in the video:
“The religious symbolism is not meant to denote anything negative, but represents the character’s battle between the dark forces of this world and the spiritual salvation of the soul. Thus at the end of the film, she chooses to be a nun, and the reason her mouth and eyes disappear is because she is withdrawing her senses from the world of evil and going inward towards prayer and contemplation.”
