Gaga On Paying For Clothes, Being Groped By McQueen

If Lady Gaga‘s assemblage of musical and artistic references seems like they’re a tad random at times, her profile in the March issue of Vogue magazine confirms that they’re anything but. Gaga’s image is controlled and even studied — and when it comes to fashion, her look is as raw and as hand-crafted as her music. And how? She pays for her clothes (yes, even the meat dress) herself.

Vogue‘s Jonathan Van Meter spent days entrenched with Gaga in Europe and talked with her about everything from her new album Born This Way (she wrote the title track in ten minutes), to her fans (sometimes, the Lady says, “being onstage is like having sex with my fans”).

But it was her fashion, of course, that steered what we thought was the most interesting parts of the article, particularly because she does her own shopping. And even though her stylist, Nicola Formichetti, influences how she looks, that doesn’t mean she has a huge impact on his designs for Thierry Mugler.

“I pay for a lot of fashion myself because I want to support young designers,” she says. All of her looks are filtered through the stylist Nicola Formichetti, who, along with the rest of her creative team, makes up the Haus of Gaga. Because Formichetti, who was recently appointed the creative director of Thierry Mugler, is in the midst of planning his first show for the house, I ask Gaga about it. “Our relationship does have some influence on the show, but I don’t want to take any credit for it. Nicola is fashion. He’s the most remarkable man.”

It’s Gaga’s relationship with Formichetti and others like in fashion that cemented her as an industry staple early on in her career.

“The fashion community in general got me much earlier than everyone else,” she says. “But actually, I felt truly embraced by this London cultural movement, that McQueen, Isabella, Daphne Guinness wing of the English crowd. I remember when I first started doing photo shoots, people would say, ‘My God, you look so much like Isabella Blow, it scares me.’ And McQueen used to say, ‘Oh, my God, your boobs!’ He actually grabbed both of them and said, ‘Even your boobs are like hers!’ ”

We’ll guess she took that as a compliment. Read the rest of her profile, and see the stunning photos of her, here.
