Liam Gallagher Thinks Wearing Roca Wear Will Get You Arrested

We’re going to be honest. Liam Gallagher isn’t exactly our cup of tea (we mean, OK, “Wonderwall” was actually a really great song, but the guy who sings it is just, well, keep reading), but even if he was we wouldn’t be able to forgive the barb he just shot at fellow celebrity clothing label backer, Jay-Z.

Gallagher said in an interview with Spin magazine’s Michael Odell that the difference between his just-launched clothing label, Pretty Green, and Jay-Z’s lucrative Rocawear brand is jail time. Yes. Jail time.

Your clothing label, Pretty Green, has done well. What am I going to experience wearing your gear as opposed to, say, Jay-Z’s Roca-wear?
You’re going to be fucking arrested wearing his gear and you’re going to pull a really nice-looking bird wearing mine.

Now, it’s not like we’re against speaking your mind — clearly we here at Styleite more or less do that all day long. But associating a brand backed by a rapper with jail time is just sort of offensive and incorrect. Also, Rocawear is a pretty admirable business story. It sold in 2007 to Iconix Brand Group — which also owns fashion heavyweights Badgely Mischka — for over $200 million, which is a whole lot more that Pretty Green is worth. Also, Rocawear is where Rachel Roy cut her teeth designing clothes. Would one of her gorgeous trench coats make a woman look more suspicious to officers of the law than some boring old frock by anyone else? No. No, it would not. If anything, Gallagher should want Pretty Green (or at least its books) to look more like Rocawear, not less.

Additionally, we can’t speak for any of the women in our office, but as far as we’re concerned Gallagher’s clothes don’t really inspire all that much lust. To suggest that any garment will make a woman want to sleep with a man is just stupid. And largely unverifiable.

Gallagher can — and no doubt will — say what he wants. And he should. But when those things are slightly racist, undoubtedly sexist and downright stupid, he should expect people to call him out.
