Websites of all stripes posted the pictures yesterday after the entire January/February issue was posted to a site called WorldMags.net. While Playboy spokespeople told Fox News they don’t know who is responsible for the leak yet, they have reached out to many sites asking them to remove the pictures. (We here at Styleite obliged to such a request last night.)
The legal action is understandable — Lohan was reportedly paid $1 million for appearing nude in the magazine, and Playboy wants to make all of its money back in newsstand sales. But who’s going to buy the magazine if they’ve already seen the photos online? Hefner himself tweeted last night that “the actual Lindsey Lohan issue will be available on newsstands at the end of next week,” but suggested that if they wanted to see the photos right now, they could buy the Playboy iPad app (for $8 a month).
We don’t know how negatively the leak will impact sales, but Playboy is taking it very seriously — so seriously that this issue specifically is being marketed as “the perfect Christmas issue for men in your life–father, son, husband, boyfriend, whoever.” (Again, Hef’s words.) Whoever has the newsstand price in their pocket.
