If people are still mad that First Lady Michelle Obama didn’t wear an American designer’s dress to the state dinner for China, will they accept a First Daughter’s endorsement of an American designer as a consolation prize?
We ask because Thread NY has just reported that 12-year-old Malia Obama wore a sparkly tank top and skirt designed by talented up-and-comer Chris Benz while her mother was swaddled in Alexander McQueen.
Benz, known for his ability to make unlikely color and pattern combinations look sophisticated, tweeted that Malia looked “sweet and sparkly” in his tank top and skirt, both pieces from his spring/summer 2010 collection. The fact that he tweeted about the dress well after the fact signals that he didn’t know she’d be wearing his dress — by which we mean to say it was probably bought and not borrowed from a showroom.
And that’s another thing we find surprising: Benz has a pretty high price point, even among already high-priced designer brands. We’re sure no one’s tax dollars got spent to buy this dress, but we’ve gotta be honest here: it’d be OK with us if they had been.
this is some kind of spaceship or something.
