The 10 Greatest Things We Learned About Manolo Blahnik In Vanity Fair

manolo blahnik

The name “Manolo Blahnik” may be synonymous with “incredible shoes,” but the man behind the heels is a famously quirky character when not at work. For this reason, we weren’t too shocked by his hilarious and fun profile in this September’s Vanity Fair, but we were nonetheless delighted. He said a number of quotable things, we learned a lot about his life and home, and we discovered that we might love him more than we love his shoes.

1. His mom made her own espadrilles for fun.

2.He originally wanted to be a theater and movie designer.

3. He’s old-fashioned. He refers to Sarah Jessica Parker as “Miss Parker,” Diana Vreeland as “Mrs. Vreeland.”

4. He thinks it’s silly that a woman would wear a pair of ill-fitting shoes. “I would say, ‘Madame, would you mind waiting so that we can make a shoe specially for your footsie?’ ”

5. “I’ve never been interested in fashion. I do fashion—yes. But let’s say I don’t follow it.”

6. He’s allergic to wine and vinegar.

7. He doesn’t enjoy fame: “I see my photo and I think I vomit!”

8. His earliest fans (before Anna Wintour and Carrie Bradshaw) included Grace Coddington, Lauren Bacall, and Bianca Jagger.

9. He loves ice cream: “’I’m dying for an ice cream,’ Manolo announced. He looked as happy as a child when the two tempting scoops of vanilla arrived.”

10. He owns somewhere between 25,000 to 30,000 pairs of prototype Manolos. There are so many he doesn’t even know the exact number. “I don’t live in a house. I live in a shoe museum! ‘Shoe mausoleum’ would be better! I lost about 300 in a flood in London. But it’s O.K. I saved some of them.”
