Robert Duffy Thinks Marc Jacobs ‘Could Do A Couture Line’

Rumors that Marc Jacobs has been tapped to take the creative helm at Dior may be unconfirmed, but there’s one man who is certain he’s got the chops for it: Jacobs’ longtime business partner Robert Duffy.

In an interview published in WSJ. magazine, Meenal Mistry spoke to both Duffy and Jacobs about their 28 year collaboration. And while the whole piece is worth reading, Duffy offered up one particularly prescient tidbit regarding Jacobs’ future in design. Duffy told Mistry, “He’s definitely learned his craft and become an amazing technician. He could do a couture line.”

One of the few points of contention regarding Jacobs’ appointment at Dior is whether or not he’s capable of overseeing one of the most storied houses in the legacy of couture, which makes Duffy’s comment eerily well-timed. Curious as to whether Duffy was referring specifically to the Dior rumors, we reached out to WSJ. to find out when exactly the interview took place. We were told the interviews took place “recently” but weren’t given a specific date. Brazilian website Glamurama was the first to report on Jacobs at Dior with a post published back on July 5th. WWD’s piece didn’t come out until this past Monday, August 22nd. But even if Duffy wasn’t responding to published reports, it’s safe to assume that he has been privvy to conversations between the designer and Dior, which have almost undoubtedly taken place.

Dior has repeatedly said they will not be announcing Galliano’s replacement until the fall, but considering fashion week is less than two weeks away, they’re probably readying the news. Which means, hopefully, we won’t have too long to wait.
