Last month Marchesa announced it would be creating a one-off version of the iconic Playboy Bunny costume to celebrate the opening of a new Playboy club in London. Now Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig‘s creation is complete, and it made its debut to an enthusiastic crowd in Britain this week.
As Chapman explained: “We kind of wanted keep the Marchesa aesthetic, but stay true to Playboy…It was a lot of fun.” This meant sticking to the Playboy basics — a strapless bodysuit with a collar, cuffs, cotton-tail, and ears — but rendering the whole thing in delicate black lace with a bit of beading.
The outfit will be auctioned off for charity in the fall, but that didn’t keep protestors from gathering outside the club. Their charge? That dressing like bunnies is not empowering for women. The designers disagreed, saying the unveiling of the outfit (which involved a fashion show featuring Bunny designs from decades past) was about celebrating women: “It would be more repressive to tell women they can’t dress a certain way and they can’t do certain things.”
