We’re not sure that you can really adequately distill and commercialize all the mystique of iconic blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe, but the execs over at Macy’s are giving it a go. Capitalizing on the success of the NBC series Smash, which is centered around the performers in a broadway musical based on Monroe’s rise to stardom, the retail chain is releasing a moderately-priced clothing line via its M Style Lab department inspired by the actress’s style and the 1950′s style silhouettes — halter tops, high-waisted trousers, cropped blouses — that she sports in the famous photographs and films with which we’re all so familiar.
Nick Woodhouse, president of Authentic Brands (the company with whom Macy’s is collaborating on the release) says he was surprised by the “Google generation’s” familiarity with Monroe, and their attraction to her “amazing quotes that you couldn’t make up yourself.” Uh, duh, Nick. What else would tweens pepper their Facebook and Twitter “About Me” pages with?
The line is being promoted in teen magazines this month, and will be available in stores and online mid-March. Deals for a makeup line with MAC Cosmetics (who else?) and a fragrance with Dior are also in the works… Though we can’t help but wonder how Monroe would feel about her collaborators foregoing her beloved Chanel for that latter one.
