PHOTOS: Fashion’s Royalty Bid Final Farewell To McQueen

A memorial service for Lee Alexander McQueen, the revolutionary designer of Alexander McQueen, drew celebrities and high-ranking members of the international fashion community’s hierarchy to St. Paul’s Cathedral in London this morning.

Supermodels Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell, actress Sarah Jessica Parker, designer Stella McCartney and editors Anna Wintour and Jefferson Hack were only a few among the many of devoted fans and celebrants who attended the service. Suzy Menkes of the International Herald Tribune and jewelry designer Shaun Leane were also in attendance, along with scores of of international press. While most of those in attendance wore head-to-toe black Alexander McQueen clothes to honor the designer, Parker made waves in a cream colored dress and a black overcoat. Wintour’s dress was gold.

WWD reports that a performance by Bjork and and a “lone Scottish piper playing ‘Braveheart’” stirred the crowd’s emotions. The 70-minute ceremony was described as grand:

The Reverend Canon Giles Fraser opened the service with a tribute to the incendiary designer, who took his own life last February.

“It was a life lived in the public gaze, but it was as vulnerable and retiring as it was glamorous,” he said. “Despite the dazzle of his world, he never forgot his East End roots and how much he owed to his loved ones.”

McQueen’s short career has had an will continue to have a lasting impact on contemporary fashion. He was 40 years old.
