When Melissa McCarthy descended upon the red carpet at last night’s ELLE’s Women in Hollywood Awards, we imagine she had primed herself to be bombarded with questions about her controversial cover for the magazine. You know, the one in which people are criticizing ELLE for covering up the plus-size actress up while putting the annual issue’s other cover stars, such as Reese Witherspoon and Shailene Woodley, in more revealing numbers. However, when E! News asked McCarthy about the backlash, she revealed that there was no reason to fret in the first place.
When asked if she expected all the fuss about wearing a coat on her cover, she replied, “No, not at all!”
In fact, it was her idea.
McCarthy told E!:
“What I found so bizarre is I picked the coat. I grabbed the coat. I covered up. I had a great black dress on but I thought, it comes out in November. I was so sick of summer. I live in Southern California. I was like, ‘Give me a big coat to wear. Give the girl some cashmere!’ I picked the coat,” McCarthy reiterated. “They were like, ‘The dress is really great,’ but I was like, ‘Yeah, but look at this.’ I was just shocked I didn’t steal it. Now I think I really should have the coat. I’m petitioning for that coat. Give me that coat. I earned it, damn it!”
So there you have it, folks. Now will someone please gift McCarthy that gorgeous coat.
