PHOTO: Meryl Streep Snags Her First American Vogue Cover

Hold on to your Academy Awards, kids! America’s greatest living actress Meryl Streep is on the January 2012 cover of Vogue, and she looks so simple and fresh that we’re almost having trouble writing about it.

Streep, who stars in the upcoming Margaret Thatcher biopic The Iron Lady, has never been on the cover of US Vogue before, which is an unfortunate occurrence that may or may not have something to do with her portrayal of high-powered fashion editor Anna Wintour Miranda Priestly in the 2006 movie The Devil Wears Prada. (Streep’s last Vogue experience was the May 2010 cover of Vogue Paris, and even then she had to share it with Penelope Cruz.)

At any rate, this cover is different from the last few ethereal, dark, high-fashion-mermaid-looking covers the magazine has put out over the past few months. It’s all Meryl, almost completely unadorned, wearing a simple dress and a pair of gobstopper diamond earrings, sitting on the beach. So does this mean that Vogue is getting a fresh, clean start to 2012? Maybe not. December and January covers often go to actors who are campaigning for big awards nominations, which must mean that Streep’s crack team of publicists and promoters really want The Iron Lady to blow up big time.
