There are only a few days left until the Met Costume Gala — one of the most highly anticipated events of the year, fashion-wise — which this year is being sponsored by Gap. A good fit, considering the theme for the evening is “American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity.”
Gap, though unarguably one of America’s most quintessential brands, is hardly known for its evening wear. And while it may be standard for Met Gala guests to wear outfits designed by the sponsor, it’s difficult to imagine Gap’s designer Patrick Robinson forming a gown out of some denim scraps. Solution? Team up with some of the fashion’s hottest young designers.
According to WWD:
M.I.A. and Zoë Kravitz are slated to come to the Met in Alexander Wang for Gap; Kirsten Dunst and Jamie Bochert will wear Rodarte for Gap; Kerry Washington and Riley Keough will sport Thakoon for Gap, and Sophie Theallet for Gap will be worn by Jessica Alba and Vera Farmiga.
Don’t worry, you don’t have to miss out on these designer collaborations just because you didn’t get an invite to the Gala. Eight of the dresses will be auctioned off after the Gala through the 31st of May, proceeds going to the Costume Institute. Gap will also be showing the Gala dresses at its new pop-up shop in Manhattan, where you will also be able to pick up t-shirts inspired by the Gala’s theme.
So many Gap collaborations, so little time. It’s difficult to choose which designer’s Gap creation we’re most excited to see. We’re rooting for Rodarte for Gap, just because we cannot imagine what the Mulleavy sisters could have conjured up for this, but we admit, the thought of an Alexander Wang for Gap t-shirt collection gets us all giddy inside.
