We were hoping we wouldn’t have enough examples to warrant a list of 2013’s worst blackface scandals, but fashion has served us up yet another in the form in of this editorial for Metal magazine, unearthed by The Fashion Law.
The Barcelona-based glossy’s Fall/Winter 2013 issue features new faces Abel Van Oeveren and Charlie Adshead in a variety of interesting guises, but it’s the least cutting-edge that stands out the most: Van Oeverent dressed as a racist. The editorial was shot by Johnny Dufort and styled by John Colver, who have evidently not been paying attention lately at all, or perhaps who have been paying attention and want in on what has indisputably been a hot theme this year.
With so many examples of fashion using the one kind of makeup everyone is supposed to hate, we can’t help but wonder if the controversy-courting is in part intentional. A twisted, xenophobic interpretation of the adage “all publicity is good publicity”? Though kind of just makes us feel shitty about the human race in general, so we’ll cite naiveté this time.
Let’s leave the “trend” behind in 2014, shall we? Remember, fashion editorials are like Halloween costumes: No one ever called one out for not being racist enough.
