He’s dressed Betty Ford, Hillary Clinton, and Laura Bush — even Oprah donned one of his dresses for the Met Costume Institute Gala earlier this week — but Oscar de la Renta just can’t seen to catch a break with Michelle Obama.
De la Renta told the Washington Post on Thursday (wistfully, we imagine), “I’d love to dress Mrs. Obama.” The FLOTUS has worn a design by Oscar’s son Moises, which makes sense considering Obama’s penchant for smaller designers. Perhaps de la Renta’s trouble stems from his famous criticism of the First Lady decision to bare her arms for her meeting with Queen Elizabeth II?
Though de la Renta does appear to be waiting patiently, he admits he’s gone a bit green-eyed over some of Michelle’s looks. The designer told the paper that the sparkly, dark grey gown by Peter Soronen Michelle Obama wore to the Governors Ball was his favorite. “She looked so fantastic,” he said. “I was dying of jealousy.”
