What did you watch last night? The MTV Movie Awards? Mad Men? Girls? The Miss USA pageant? Well, if you missed that last one, we’ve got you covered.
Last night Olivia Culpo, Miss Rhode Island, was crowned Miss USA. Culpo is a sophomore at Boston University, where she has made the Dean’s List every semester. She is also a kickass cellist. Unfortunately, nobody could see her skills as the Miss USA pageant (which feeds into Miss Universe) does not include a talent portion (unlike Miss America, which feeds into Miss World).
While Culpo looked very pretty, it was her interview that won us (and the judges) over. When asked how she would feel if a transgender woman won the Miss USA title, a reference to the Jenna Talackova controversy, Culpo answered:
“I do think that that would be fair, but I can understand that people would be a little apprehensive to take that road because there is a tradition of natural-born women, but today where there are so many surgeries and so many people out there who have a need to change for a happier life, I do accept that because I believe it’s a free country.”
Now enjoy some photos of the competition:
this is some kind of spaceship or something.
