Nobody has a face quite like Naomi Campbell‘s. That much is crystal clear in the February issue of Elle, which features a killer spread of the supermodel and an accompanying article to drum up excitement for her new show called, well, The Face.
Though fellow judge and mentor Coco Rocha is the one usually known for her unparalleled posing skills, Campbell is clearly no slouch either. In the black and white Thomas Whiteside-lensed shoot, she shows off wares by the usual suspects like Louis Vuitton and Alexander McQueen, as well as some slightly more unexpected labels like Thom Browne and Véronique Leroy. She pulls off a $2,000 leather honeycomb hat like nobody’s business and is wearing heels, which means that the photoshoot was done before her attempted mugging in Paris in late November.
Campbell tells writer Mickey Rapkin about her motivation for signing onto the Oxygen network series as both an executive producer and on-screen mentor for aspiring models. The 42-year-old stunner explains:
“When I first got Yves Saint Laurent Couture, I didn’t know how to take off a cape. I would ask Katoucha and Dalma — the real divas of the runway — ‘Can you show me?’ I’ve never been afraid to ask for help. I care for my girls. Every single one of them. I’m not here to put anyone down.”
Thanks to Campbell’s diva-ish reputation, the move to reality television initially raised some eyebrows — and some questions — about her longtime feud with America’s Next Top Model host Tyra Banks. Campbell addressed the issue graciously, however:
“I don’t watch the other reality model shows. I’ll never have anything to say. If you ask me about Tyra Banks, I’m proud of her as a woman of color. She’s given girls opportunity, and God bless her.”
But no matter how serene she sounds now, the super will never quite escape the incident in 2008 when she was charged with assault for throwing her cell phone at her then-assistant. “I’m never gonna get away from it,” she concedes. She continues:
“It’s part of my history. I was remorseful and regretful. I’ve served. I did that time. And I never want to be in that position again.”
