SHOWstudio founder Nick Knight says he sees fashion as form of communication, and after watching one of his films, it is truly incredible how he manages to say so much without a single word. The fashion photographer, who directed Lady Gaga’s Born This Way video and counted Alexander McQueen as a friend, uses advanced technology and an incredible eye for detail to create some of the most controversial, ground breaking fashion material out there.
In an interview for Blackberry’s Visionaries series, Knight sat down to talk about why fashion is so important in every society, and to every individual. Of Gaga he raves,
“She is like all the fashion designers put together in an ever on-going fashion show. She has been someone who promoted fashion in a way it really needed. Gaga deserves a knighthood or whatever the equivalent would be for the service she’s done for fashion.”
He also talks about working with McQueen and defying fashion-world norms to express his idea of beauty through art.
“I found the presentation of one image of women was completely unacceptable with how I lived my life. I fell in love with a woman who was curvacious and saw absolutely no reason why I shouldn’t be able to express that in the images I made.”
If you are feeling at all disillusioned with the fashion industry, we guarantee this video will completely change your outlook. Knight’s appreciation for fashion is so multifaceted, yet he manages to beautifully articulate the importance of design as an art.
