Last night, a non-model person who owns an event company, Shannon Leigh Lenihan, Instagrammed photos of her golden hair braided into a burka over her mouth. She’s wearing a jeweled headpiece, and it’s the handiwork of a hair stylist “dionysiou,” who gathered her stick straight hair and draped it over her face from the nose down.
We’ve got to give it to her. Her hair is silky, she’s got an adequate number of colors of the blonde spectrum working for her, and perhaps most impressive, the woman probably had to drink her food through a straw. But really though. Of course burka hair is bad.
Burkas, the ones made of fabric, are religious garb. Sorry. It’s not cool and subversive to twist someone’s hair into a burka. It’s misappropriation. Burkas aren’t a “mystery chic” hairdo to try out for a day. Some religious sects believe hair is sacred, so the burka is there to cover it and effectively prevent sex scandals that could terrorize the world.
The timing for burka also seems a tad off right now. Wasn’t there a thing going on over there in Palestine or something? Maybe not the best time to play Arabian Nights dress-up with white girl hair.
