Creepy-amazing megamultimillion dollar moguls Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have just added a new line to their resumes: Paparazzi photographers. Think about it: They’re small, quiet, elusive and have a penchant for wearing cloaks. It makes perfect sense.
The revelation is made in an exclusive interview with WWD about the expansion of The Row and the launch of their new fragrances, Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black and Elizabeth and James Nirvana White (yes, soon you will be able to smell like an Olsen twin). Of The Row, which will get its first stand-alone store in Los Angeles next year, the twins say they get so excited when they see fans wearing their clothing in the street that they they surreptitiously snap them in the said wares:
“Anytime we’ve started a brand and we see people wearing it — and we haven’t given it to them — we try and take pictures of them,” said Mary-Kate. “The first time we saw a Row T-shirt, an Elizabeth and James piece, a handbag — we got giddy.” Added Ashley: “It’s such a nice feeling that somebody appreciates your work.”
Add that to your bucket list.
They’re also admitted perfectionists, taking a year and a half to develop Nirvana Black and a few more months for Nirvana White. Around 50 different concoctions were mixed up before they hit on the winner — “and that’s 50 versions not including the various tweaks we made to individual notes,” Ashley adds. They also flew in out-of-season peonies from New Zealand and lily of the valley from Holland for the interview, because they are key ingredients in the scents and because of course they did.
The fragrances will be exclusive to Sephora in late January of next year. And how will the twins measure its success?
“I’d like to walk down the street and smell a note of it,” said Mary-Kate.
HOLD THE PHONE: Not only are the Olsen twins taking photos of you, they’ll also be smelling you come January 2013. Can you think of any greater reason to meander around New York City wearing the scent of amber and sandalwood and a $34,000 backpack?
