Olympic Weightlifter Silences Haters, Looks Chic Whilst Doing So

When 18-year-old Zoe Smith lifted a combined total of nearly 800 lbs. above her head a few days ago at the Olympics—effectively breaking Great Britain’s female weightlifting record—she had plenty of motivation.

After being featured in a documentary about weightlifters, the athlete was targeted by hateful Internet bullies who blasted her as a “lesbian” who “looks like a bloke.” C’mon, really? Who picks an Internet fight with a badass Olympic weightlifter who could probably whoop a good majority of the population, both male and female? Idiots, that’s who.

Not only did Smith (in her own words) give “two fingers up to them” with her showing in London this week, but she also took to her blog in July to give the haters a piece of her (apparently awesome) mind. Here’s part of what she had to say to her foes, who were largely—no surprise here—male.

“The obvious choice of slander when talking about female weightlifting is “how unfeminine, girls shouldn’t be strong or have muscles, this is wrong”. And maybe they’re right… in the Victorian era. To think people still think like this is laughable, we’re in 2012! This may sound like a sweeping generalization, but most of the people that do think like this seem to be chauvinistic, pigheaded blokes who feel emasculated by the fact that we, three small, fairly feminine girls, are stronger than them … We, as any women with an ounce of self-confidence would, prefer our men to be confident enough in themselves to not feel emasculated by the fact that we aren’t weak and feeble.”

And to top it all off, Zoe doesn’t even look like a dude—at all. Not remotely dude-like. She’s adorable and looks like she was practically born knowing how to pose on the red carpet, which is sort of hilarious considering what her body is otherwise capable of. Good for you, Zoe! Show ‘em who’s boss; the world needs as many strong, no-nonsense women as it can get. Especially ones that can also rock a good glitter pump.

We look forward to watching her Olympic progression, and can’t wait to see her in Rio!
