Representatives of Oscar de la Renta are being pretty vehement in denying rumors that the designer of the eponymous label is too ill to work and considering finding a replacement.
Page Six reports that after De La Renta had hip-replacement surgery last month, industry insiders circulated rumors that he still wasn’t well during New York Fashion Week. And while he was well enough to take a turn on his own runway in September, the speculation persisted.
A spokesperson told Page Six that the rumors about the designer having to take naps in between meeting just aren’t true, and that he won’t be replaced any time soon.
“Oscar happily is enjoying excellent health. He’s putting in a full work day every day. Any new hires have nothing to do with the design process, and there is no plan whatsoever to even think of replacing him as the creative head.”
And that sort of makes sense. De la Renta isn’t the youngest designer in the world, but at 78 years, he’s the same age as fellow genius Valentino Garavani and just one year younger than other fellow genius Karl Lagerfeld. Yves Saint Laurent was 71 when he died in 2008, and no publication can agree on what exactly he died from.
So, who knows? We certainly hope the shiny press release version of this story is the truth. We love Oscar and we have ever since we bought a pair of his glasses in college. But every dynasty needs an heir, and as much as we hate to say it, it might be time for the king of ruffles and evening wear to pick someone to wear his crown.
