Marial Haenn, the stylist behind Pharrell‘s latest music video “Marilyn Monroe” and who works alongside Rob Zangardi, has been styling with the world’s happiest pop star since January. And although their collaborative looks gain massive amounts of exposure, this is the first time Pharrell has actually ever paired up with a stylist (or two). So it’s been a challenge working with such a creative professional who’s already established in fashion, holds such a strong vision, and prefers dressing down — the man wore shorts (albeit by Lanvin) to the Oscars after all.
As long as Haenn and Zangard continue working with Pharrell, the one thing that they’ll always have to deal with is his favorite (only?) hat by Vivienne Westwood. “I think it will be forever his thing,” Haenn tells Style.com. “Now he’s doing different colors. We even cut a hole in his hat for the video and the hat he wore at Coachella as well. So he’s finding different ways of doing it.” In “Marilyn Monroe,” which has a Wes Anderson-inspired color palette, you’ll notice P’s hat in red, magenta, green, and the original brown but with, yes, holes the size of a small child’s fist cut into it. (Ed note: We hope the person at Vivienne Westwood whose job is to solely produce all of those damn hats has gotten some sort of salary raise or bonus.)
Pharrell Williams: musical genius, fashion renaissance man, and total pro with a pair of scissors. What will the hat be morphed into next? We sense a social media-generated brainstorm brewing…
