Vogue Italia’s latest cover story, shot by famed photog Steven Meisel titled “Haute Mess”, sparked a brushfire of discussion last week over whether or the not the spread was in fact racist. Models done up in dramatic hairdo’s, candy-colored makeup, and elaborate nail art were shot draped in diner booths and surrounded by fast food. The set up and styling caused many to wonder if the story was intentionally poking fun at African American and Latino culture.
In the latest development, Jezebel writer Jenna Sauers tracked down some hair styles that look surprisingly similar to a few featured in the Vogue Italia spread. The styles, taken from a food and fitness blog called Yum Yucky, all appear in a photo gallery named Gallery of Ghetto-Fabulous, Edible Hair Dos. And sure enough, alongside styles boasting Jolly Ranchers and Kool-Aid are almost exact replicas of those seen in “Haute Mess.” So were these photos part of the inspiration behind the shoot?
