Say what you will about Hedi Slimane’s collection for Saint Laurent fall 2013, the only opinion that matters is this one from Pierre Bergé, the lifelong partner of late designer Yves Saint Laurent. And Bergé’s thoughts, as expected, are nothing short of supportive for the shocking show.
If you recall, Slimane’s latest collection took style cues from the ’90s grunge movement. Everyone and their mother weighed in on the matter — Courtney Love praised the designer for knowing “his shit” and said the clothes reminded her of Value Village (quite the compliment), while Cathy Horyn flat-out said the wares were not special and that the show displayed “lazy values.”
Well, Bergé has been on Team Slimane ever since the designer was appointed the house’s new creative director, and his support is once again evident in his critique of the latest collection. He told the Wall Street Journal:
“I adored it; it’s exactly what needed to be done. It’s very moving for me, because it’s the spirit of Saint Laurent, but revisited with Hedi’s enormous talent. It’s terrific…I was the one who hired him, after all, so I have always had tremendous confidence in Hedi, and I’m thrilled.”
Well, there ya go — case closed. Now let’s start thinking about what controversy Slimane has up his sleeves for spring 2014!
