Ralph Lauren Awarded With Key That Doesn’t Open Anything

There’s really no field on which anyone can compete with Ralph Lauren. The man has everything — impeccable style, the adoration of, like, millions of people the world over and basically the exclusive rights to classic Americana.

And now he has a key to New York City. (Though according to Bloomberg himself, the key opens “absolutely nothing.”)

Last night, in a ceremony that combined the opening of Lauren’s new mansion of a store on New York’s Madison Avenue and the designer’s 71st birthday, Mayor Michael Bloomberg awarded Lauren for his philanthropic work and his leadership in business. He’s the first fashion designer ever to receive the honor.

While in most other cities, getting such a key is an honor reserved for overzealous PTA members or national pie-baking competition winners, in Manhattan it’s actually kind of a big deal. Hamish Bowles, Vera Wang, Martha Stewart and a bevy of wealthy, fabulous people turned out to sip champagne and watch Bloomberg hand Lauren an oversize gold key and a kitschy “I Love New York” keychain.

“I can tell you this little secret that will help your career: It’s the accessories that really make the whole outfit,” Bloomberg joked as he presented the keychain.

And if anyone understands the importance of accessorizing, it’s Lauren. The designer joins a long list of distinguished people known both in the city and across the world for their “outstanding civic contributions,” including Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama and Mihail Gorbechev.
